Bill Bergey, the hard-hitting Philadelphia Eagles linebacker who epitomized the gritty mystique of the 1970s NFL, has died at the age of 79, according to his family.
The South Dayton, New York resident’s death was revealed by his son Jake Bergey, a former professional lacrosse player.
“After a long, hard battle of three years, Dad lost his battle with cancer,” the younger Bergey wrote on X. “The best father, friend, grandfather, football player and downright amazing person in this world. I will really miss him. I love you, daddy.’
The post included a one-year-old photo of the elder Bergey, wearing a No. 66 Eagles jersey, eating pie in a lounge chair next to a husky.
Bergey’s death has since been confirmed by several media outlets.
“I’m so sorry for your loss Jake,” wrote John Clark, a local NBC anchor in Philadelphia. ‘I’m thinking of you and your family. Sending prayers.”
