Phil Foden has left the England squad for the European Championship and flown home due to an urgent family matter, the Football Association has confirmed.
The Manchester City star has started all three of England’s matches at the tournament in Germany so far and his absence is expected to be ‘temporary’.
An FA spokesman said: ‘Phil Foden has temporarily left the England camp and returned to Britain due to an urgent family matter.’
It is not yet known specifically why Foden has left Gareth Southgate’s group, but his absence could put his involvement in their last-16 match on Sunday in doubt.
Foden played most of England’s insipid 0-0 against Slovenia on Tuesday evening and flew home less than 24 hours later.
