Phase 5 of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024: What was the turnout at 9 am?

The fifth phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on Monday recorded a voter turnout of 10.28 per cent in the first two hours of polling. Forty-nine parliamentary constituencies, spread across six states and two Union Territories (UTs), went to the polls on May 20. The voting started at 7:00 am and was expected to end between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm.

LS polls Phase 5: Voter turnout in Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, a voter turnout of 6.33 per cent was recorded in 13 Lok Sabha constituencies at 9 am on Monday in the fifth and final phase of the general elections in the state. Specific constituency turnouts include:

> Bhiwandi: 4.86 percent

> Dhule: 6.92 percent

> Dindori: 6.40 percent

> Kalyan: 5.39 percent

> Mumbai North: 6.19 percent

> Mumbai North Central: 6.01 percent

> Mumbai North East: 6.83 percent

> Mumbai North West: 6.87 percent

> Mumbai South: 5.34 percent

> Mumbai South Central: 7.79 percent

> Nashik: 6.45 percent

> Palghar: 7.95 percent

> Thane: 5.67 percent

Early voters included Union Minister Piyush Goyal, industrialist Anil Ambani, actor Akshay Kumar, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran, Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das, former Governor of Uttar Pradesh Ram Naik, actors Janhvi Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar, and Marathi theater actor Prashant Damle.

LS polls Phase 5: Voter turnout in Bihar

In Bihar, 8.86 percent of the 9.5 million eligible voters cast their votes at 9 am on Monday in five Lok Sabha constituencies: Muzaffarpur, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Saran and Hajipur. Voting started at 7am and will last until 6pm.

A senior official from the main polling station said these constituencies will decide the fate of 80 candidates in 9,436 polling stations.

The turnout at 9 am was highest in Sitamarhi at 9.49 per cent, followed by 9.33 per cent in Muzaffarpur, 9.11 per cent in Madhubani, 9 per cent in Saran and 7.43 per cent in Hajipur.

The total number of voters includes 4.5 million women, 2.1 million people under the age of 29 and 126,000 people in the age group of 18 to 19 years.

LS polls Phase 5: Voter turnout in West Bengal

West Bengal has recorded a voter turnout of 15.35 per cent in seven Lok Sabha constituencies in the fifth phase of voting at 9 am.

The highest turnout was seen in Uluberia parliamentary constituency with 17.25 percent, followed by 16.38 percent in Arambag (SC), 15.2 percent in Howrah, 15.19 percent in Bangaon (SC), 15.08 percent in Barrackpore, 14.43 percent in Sreerampur, and 14.01 percent in Hooghly.

Voting started at 7am and will last until 6pm. The state has more than 12 million eligible voters, including 6.4 million men, 6.2 million women and 348 of the third gender.

More than 57 percent of polling stations have been identified as sensitive, with more than 60,000 personnel from the central armed forces, supplemented by about 30,000 local police officers.

LS polls Phase 5: Voter turnout in Jharkhand

In Jharkhand, nearly 11.68 per cent voters were in three Lok Sabha constituencies — Chatra, Hazaribag and Koderma — at 9 am. Voting started at 7am and will last until 5pm.

The highest turnout was in Hazaribag at 12.04 percent, followed by Koderma at 11.56 percent and Chatra at 11.43 percent.

This phase includes 22 candidates in Chatra, 15 in Koderma and 17 in Hazaribag. There are more than 5.8 million eligible voters, including 2.8 million women. The state has set up 6,705 booths, of which 6,130 are in rural areas. Of these, 73 stands are managed by women, 13 by persons with disabilities and 13 by young people.

There are nearly 1.7 million voters in Chatra constituency alone.

LS polls Phase 5: Voter turnout in Odisha

Odisha on Monday recorded a voter turnout of 6.99 per cent in the first two hours of elections in five Lok Sabha constituencies and 35 Assembly segments.

Voting began at 7 am in Aska, Kandhamal, Bargarh, Bolangir and Sundergarh parliamentary constituencies, besides their corresponding Assembly segments. Both the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are held simultaneously in the state.

The Chief Electoral Officer, NB Dhal, confirmed that voting took place at all 9,162 polling stations without major incidents, although some issues with the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) were immediately resolved. Issues with EVMs were identified and resolved during the mock poll before voting began.

LS Polls Phase 5: Voter turnout in Jammu and Kashmir

In Jammu and Kashmir, over 7.6 percent of the 1.7 million voters voted in the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency in the first two hours.

The elections were conducted smoothly across the constituency, which comprises eighteen Assembly segments spread across Baramulla, Bandipora, Kupwara and Budgam districts.

In the 2019 elections, Baramulla constituency saw a voter turnout of 34.17 percent, while Kupwara district was the highest at 51.7 percent.

This year the electorate has 875,000 male voters, 862,000 female voters and 34 of the third gender. In addition, more than 17,000 voters are people with disabilities, and 527 voters are over 100 years old.

More than 8,000 polling station members, including reserves, have been deployed in 2,103 polling stations to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections.
