As a drug category, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs have no legal definition in India. For all practical purposes, drugs are considered OTC unless they are specifically stated to be prescription drugs. Consumers can therefore buy over-the-counter medicines without a doctor’s prescription at any pharmacy (physical or online), store or supermarket. About a fortnight ago, Joint Drug Controller AK Pradhan said discussions and deliberations were underway to introduce guidelines for over-the-counter drugs.
