The PGA Tour has revealed which four tournaments will be the first in the rotation to receive higher purses in 2023.

In August, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan announced that the tour would not go ahead with plans for a previously announced global series. Instead, he revealed that the purses would be increased for 13 events – placing four tournaments on an announced rotation.

Monahan announced these plans at a time when LIV Golf was pulling more and more players away from the tour, including household names like Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka.

As the two competing golf circuits continue their war of attrition, the PGA Tour is making more money available to its members. That also applies to these soon to be announced tournaments. This first group of four will be rotated from year to year

The four tournaments for this season are the Waste Management Phoenix Open – played at TPC Scottsdale near Phoenix, Arizona, the RBC Heritage played at Harbor Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, the Wells Fargo Championship played at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Travelers Championship held at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.

When plans for a global tour were initially unveiled, they were seen as a way for the tour to compete directly with LIV – both in play structure and prize money, as well as in the sport’s global reach.

The purses for those global events were slated to be a whopping $25 million, with the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings and top performers at some events starting in the fall. They would also have no cuts in the events.

In lieu of that limited run, the PGA Tour will choose to increase the purse for 13 tournaments with an average size of $20 million for each.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has made a number of changes in an effort to keep players happy and where they are today.

The tour guaranteed a minimum salary of $500,000 for rookies, which can be received in advance, and lower-ranked players will receive a $5,000 stipend for each cut missed.

In addition, the top players are committed to playing at least 20 tournaments a year – including the four majors.

The first announcement of the international series came at a June press conference at the Travelers Championship.

Following the 2023 calendar, the Tour plans to return to a streamlined schedule running from January to August.

Two of these four newly announced tournaments will be played right after a major. The RBC Heritage is traditionally played the week after the Masters, while the Travelers Championship is usually held after the US Open.
