Peter Schmeichel ‘holds his hands up’ to Man City after they secured the treble

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel ‘holds his hands up’ to Man City after they secure the treble, as they’ve played ‘the best football he’s ever seen’ this season

Peter Schmeichel said Man United should “hold their hands up” against City if they completed their treble by beating Inter Milan in the Champions League final.

Perhaps they should take his advice, after Man City’s 1-0 win over Inter Milan in Istanbul handed them the Champions League trophy, their third of the season.

The legendary goalkeeper played for the Red Devils who won the Champions League, FA Cup and Premier League in 1999, but believes Pep Guardiola’s side are playing ‘the best football he’s ever seen’.

Schmeichel made 56 appearances for the Red Devils that season, as United completed what was the only treble in English football at the time.

After winning the league and the FA Cup, City completed a record season on Saturday and the 59-year-old felt they deserved the honour.

Of his own treble success, Schmeichel said, “It’s been a long time since we did that in 1999. It was probably the best period of my professional life.

‘There’s no question about that. I was very proud to make supporters so happy. It’s something we’ve talked about ever since.”

Speaking of the Cityzens, who Schmeichel also represented towards the end of his career, he added: “Man City are playing so well this season and the chance to get one more win has brought all that back.”

“I don’t remember speaking about it [the 1999 treble] as much as I’ve had in the past two weeks. And if it’s broken by Manchester City you just have to put your hands up because they’ve been absolutely fantastic this year.

“They played the best football. Going back only to the semi-final at the Etihad, the first 45 minutes are probably the best half of football I’ve ever seen. It will be well deserved. But they have to pass Inter Milan, which is not an easy task.’

Manchester is now the second city in Europe, after Milan, to have two Champions League winners, and the Red Devils’ famous treble-winning season of 1999 has been matched.

Rodri got the winner against an Inter side that proved to be a tougher test than many expected, with Ederson making two crucial late saves.

The midfielder said after the game that he felt he had played ‘s***’ until half-time, but persuaded the manager to keep him on and eventually picked up the winner.

Kevin De Bruyne had a less fruitful evening, as he was injured in the first half.
