News anchor Peter Overton struggles to continue broadcasting on Channel Nine after choking on a glass of water live on air: ‘I’m so sorry’

Peter Overton got into trouble Monday night during the broadcast of the Nine News bulletin.

The anchor returned to the air coughing and spluttering after a commercial break as he struggled to regain his composure.

“I’m so sorry, I just had a glass of water and it went the wrong way,” the 57-year-old apologized to viewers.

The experienced anchor choked, clearing his throat as he said “excuse me” over and over before he managed to ease the discomfort.

It’s not the first time the respected newsman has been caught up in a live-broadcast blunder.

He made headlines late last year when he made a funny mistake while covering the Queen’s funeral.

Peter and outgoing A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw jointly anchored the network’s coverage of Her Majesty’s funeral at Westminster Abbey.

But they were mocked around the world after failing to identify Britain’s then Prime Minister Liz Truss when commenting during the service.

The British leader got out of her car to attend Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, but Peter and Tracy were left scratching their heads over who she was.

“So this is an important motorcade, or so we’re told now,” said Peter.

“Come with us while we try to identify who’s getting out of the car. Of course under police escort. I’d suggest these are royalties, Tracy.

‘Difficult to identify. Perhaps petty royals, members of the… I can’t identify them at the moment…”

Shortly after the blunder, Peter Overton issued a correction.

“I was told that was Liz Truss, the new prime minister, in the distance, she could see it jumping out of the car. Thank you very much for that information,” he told viewers.

In 2004, Peter married fellow broadcaster Jessica Rowe and they have two children together, Allegra, 16, and Giselle, 13.
