The comedian, 47, stayed by his friend’s side and said he was “proud” to call the Olympic boxer, 25, his mate in a gushing Instagram tribute on Thursday night.

He praised the bronze medalist for his “dignity” after he was arrested at Sydney Airport on May 2 over allegations of domestic violence by ex Ashley Ruscoe.

Garside responded to his friend’s supportive post, saying, “I appreciate this more than you’ll ever know. Grateful to be connected to you and your family.’

The duo seem to have bonded since starring on the ninth season of I’m A Celebrity this year, where they both lost to netball star Liz Ellis.

Garside was arrested by police at Sydney Airport in May after she returned from South Africa where he was filming I’m a Celebrity.

Former girlfriend Ruscoe, 34, allegedly approached police on March 25, the same day Garside left for South Africa, saying she feared for her safety.

A source close to the former couple says Ruscoe was concerned about comments Garside may have made about her on the reality TV show after their divorce.

However, the domestic violence charge and accompanying domestic violence arrest warrant were formally dropped on Wednesday by the police prosecutor at a hearing at Sydney’s Downing Center Local Court.

Daily Mail Australia exclusively revealed that the “overwhelming evidence” clearing Garside of all wrongdoing was tapes of the incident which Ruscoe claimed turned violent.

In the middle of an argument with his ex-girlfriend, the famous boxer presses record on his phone.

The footage and audio captured from those recordings eventually led to police withdrawing the domestic violence charges against Garside and proving his innocence.

According to sources, the recordings reveal Ruscoe as the aggressor – a very different story from the original claim that Garside attacked Ruscoe on Bellevue Hill in eastern Sydney on March 1.

In the confronting footage, Ruscoe taunts Garside and threatens several times to ruin his career and “mess up your reputation.”

According to sources, Ruscoe even claimed at one point that she would “go straight to the Daily Mail.”

She said it doesn’t matter if Garside was innocent or not – once the story was out it would “go against your career.”

Throughout the taping, it is believed that Garside denied doing anything wrong or attacking his ex-girlfriend.

Ruscoe allegedly replied that the police would believe her side of the story and drag him out of the house.

In a small sequence of footage obtained by Daily Mail Australia, Ruscoe walks through a doorway carrying a briefcase before appearing to lunge at Garside.

The video then drops out.

Ruscoe declined to comment.
