Australian author Peter FitzSimons has jumped to Prince Harry’s defense after his explosive memoir revealed a series of attacks on members of his own family.
FitzSimons, who is married to TV personality Lisa Wilkinson, responded strongly to a Twitter user who suggested Prince Harry was a “weak man” and “controlled by a manipulative woman”, with his wife Meghan Markle being the only one. which is why the royals were “stabbing their own family.”
“That’s too simplistic, in my opinion,” FitzSimons said.
‘His overall point is: “They’ve been leaked against me and my wife for years. I’m not leaking, I’m putting my name on my views, and this is what happened.” And to me it sounds believable.
Former leader of the Republican movement Peter FitzSimons (pictured) has been quick to defend Prince Harry in his feud with the Royal Family.
Prince Harry (pictured with his wife Meghan Markle) has gone public with a series of shocking revelations and allegations against the royal family.
In explosive interviews with British and American television networks, Prince Harry defended revealing family secrets in his Spare biography and argued that he was retaliating for being leaked by other royals.
He accused stepmother Camilla Parker Bowles of sacrificing him on her personal PR altar and said members of the royal family were “sleeping with the devil” by leaking stories about him and his wife Meghan Markle to the UK press.
The argument impressed FitzSimons.
“As for the idea that he shouldn’t tell family secrets, his point of equality is that everyone else in the Royal Family has been leaking to the press for years,” FitzSimons said.
‘They have featured several worthwhile books, courtesy of the tabloids. So for once, you can tell your own story.
In response to another Twitter user who asked why a “smart man” would waste time thinking about the royal family, FitzSimons outlined the Republican implications of the fallout between the Prince and his family.
“One reason is that the whole mess talks about the republic,” FitzSimons tweeted.
‘The notion that this is a special family, put there by God to be so much better than the rest of us, that they should rule over us, is wearing a bit thin, isn’t it?’
FitzSimons (pictured with his wife Lisa Wilkinson) resigned as leader of the Republican movement last October.
FitzSimons stepped down as head of the Australian Republican Movement in October last year, but has remained a staunch Republican and continues to push for the country to ditch the royal head of state.
Polls showed support for a republic falling after the death of Queen Elizabeth II last September.
Although an outspoken Republican, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has ruled out a referendum until at least his next term, with the Indigenous Voice in Parliament being the priority for major constitutional change.
This morning, Bill Shorten, the Albanian government’s Minister for Government Services, called the royal family “dysfunctional” and “estranged” as it pushed for Australia to become a republic.
“It’s a shame to see a family breakdown, but perhaps at the deepest level why do we have to keep borrowing from a dysfunctional British family to be Australia’s Head of State?” he told the Today Show on Tuesday morning.
Shorten said the details divulged by Harry made it seem like viewers were sitting in a “front row seat to a family breakup”.
Bill Shorten has called the royal family ‘dysfunctional’ and ‘at odds’ and has questioned why Australia has not become a republic.
It’s a gossip but sparkling. To me, it just shows that there’s a lot of damage and trauma, but on another level, this is just family gossip,” he said.
“And it reminds me that this family is the head of state of Australia, so it really puts a question mark around our governmental structures, where we have a feuding family on the other side of the world who seem to really dislike each other very much. – actually they are the head of Australia.’
