‘They had been together since they were children but she found it very hard and my mother struggled with depression and alcoholism and it became too much for her. One night she tried to commit suicide and I found her. That was tough.

‘I felt like I was responsible, I didn’t feel like it enough. I didn’t feel like my being there was enough for her to want to be there and I did feel responsible for the circumstances surrounding how it happened, I could have stopped it.

“I knew, even though she was so young, that she was drinking and not in a good place. She was very upset the night it happened.

‘She told me she was going to be okay and I went to my room and I could hear her crying and I stayed in that room and if I hadn’t stayed [in my room]then maybe I could have stopped it. It was a tough time.’

He added, “I never felt unloved, but I just never felt like I was enough. It’s not that I didn’t feel loved by my mom or dad, I just felt like I was in the way. They had their own problems at the time and I felt like an afterthought.”
