Pete Murray reveals how father’s death inspired his music career

Pete Murray reveals how his father’s tragic death when he was just 18 inspired him to pursue a career in music

Pete Murray has revealed that losing his father at a young age motivated him to start his music career.

The Australian singer, who was just 18 years old when his father died aged 47, said the tragic loss left him looking for a career where he could spend time with his family.

“What I wanted out of life was time because my father died. He and Mum bought a caravan and they were about to travel around Australia,” said the 53-year-old News Corp on Saturday.

“But Dad died a month before that happened. I didn’t want that to happen to me. I wanted to have time to spend with my family and friends,” he continued.

Pete’s extraordinary success in the music industry has led to him selling over 1.2 million albums in Australia and enabling him to live the life he has always dreamed of.

‘I want to continue. That’s what I love doing the most, and playing live is so much fun. I love it. I want to do it until the day I die, and I think that’s a long way off,’ he mused.

Earlier this month, Murray revealed he thought his breakthrough 2003 album Feeler would flop.

The hitmaker So Beautiful made the shocking admission during an interview on the Jess Rowe big talk show.

The Australian hitmaker, who was just 18 years old when his father died aged 47, said the tragic loss left him looking for a career that would allow him to spend time with his family.

Released to great acclaim, Feeler was Pete’s second album and eventually sold over 500,000 copies, reaching No. 1 on the Australian ARIA chart.

But Pete admitted to Rowe that at the time he thought it was “destined to fail.”

“Sometimes you get into a post-album blues after an album comes out and you just can’t find anything good about it… I thought I’d failed,” he confessed.

However, once radio stations heard the record, it started to take off and became a blockbuster hit in the Australian music industry.

Murray is a father of four sons Pedro and Charlie from his first marriage and shares daughters Saachi and Sahara with his second wife Mira.

Pete Murray’s Best Of album is out now and his national greatest hits tour kicks off July 8.
