“That struck me,” said Louis, commenting on the personalized branding.

“Oh my God, and mine,” Pete added. ‘It’s an old suitcase that contained a lot of stuff. I hadn’t opened it in ages and boom! When I opened it, don’t touch it. It’s quite a strange thing to have on your suitcase.’

“Especially in your suitcase,” Louis noted. “By the time you get it open, it’s too late.”

Among the piles of photographs and saved newspapers, some of which document his high-profile drug-related arrests, Doherty also discovered an old photo of him posing next to a collage of Kate in the National Portrait Gallery.

“You’re starting to make me look like I have a locker full of Kate Moss memories or something,” he joked. “That’s a complete possibility.”

Doherty went on to reveal that he recently saw the supermodel in a TV commercial, admitting it was a reminder of why he went cold during their three-year relationship.’

“I saw her in a Coca Cola advert the other day,” he said, mimicking the model’s South London tone. “She said that to her assistant in the morning, and then I heard that Donald Trump is doing the same thing, and that scared me a little bit.”

“What, drink a Coke?” Louis asked.

“Well, I order it from her assistant all the time,” he replied.

Doherty and Libertines bandmate Carl Barât also recalled a difficult period in the group’s history when Theroux visited them on tour.

Doherty said he was ‘on the honeymoon with crack and heroin’, which led to him being banned from the band before breaking into Carl’s flat.

Saying to Louis: ‘They were doing these gigs without me, they were doing Glastonbury without me and I went round (to his house) to beg him to say, “I know you’re worried about the drugs, but please don’t go on without me”‘.

Barât then revealed how his friend’s increasing addiction had made it impossible for him to continue with the band’s schedule and commitments.

Doherty, who is now healthy and happily married to filmmaker Katia de Vidas, explained how he kicked open his friend’s front door in a desperate bid to stay with the group, only to discover no one was home.

During that period, Barât was performing in Japan in what he called the “guilt tour” without Doherty, and was suffering from his own addiction problems.

“People kept saying to me: your friend is going off the rails, he needs help: ‘You can’t let him do this’ ‘You can’t let him do that’, but you’ve seen the man, he’s a law to himself.”

He added, “But I knew I had to keep the band together and I knew we had these commitments, and Pete was walking around with this new crew and I felt like he was walking away from me.”

“I felt like I was breaking the bond, our pack, everything we had sworn together in blood and even though Pete says he was kicked out of the band, that was never the case, but of course he didn’t see it that way.”
