A Brisbane man is charged with an “inappropriate” act with his dog after disturbing images were allegedly found on his phone.
The man, whose name cannot be identified for legal reasons, appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday on various charges, including a “breach of duty of care” relating to “improper handling of a dog”.
He also faces felony child pornography and drug charges.
He understood that the dog was removed from the house rented by the man on Monday and placed in the care of Animal Welfare.
Police pounced on the Brisbane man’s rented house in Brisbane on Monday.
The man, believed to be in his 30s, was charged with two counts of possession of child exploitation material after police searched his phone while investigating an unrelated matter in December.
Video of the man and dog was also allegedly discovered during the search.
The matter has been adjourned to March 13 and the man remains in police custody.
An investigation into the defendant’s online activity allegedly uncovered inappropriate images involving his dog.
The man appeared at Brisbane Magistrates Court this week with another appearance scheduled for March 13.
A Queensland Police spokesman declined to elaborate on the charges, saying only that the case is ongoing and the defendant could face further charges before his next hearing.
The penalty for a person convicted of breach of duty to care for an animal is up to $43,125 or one year in prison in Queensland.
However, more serious violations can result in penalties similar to those for animal cruelty (section 18), ie up to $287,500 or 3 years in prison.
The greater penalty is applied when the breach of the duty of care by a person results in the death, serious deformity, serious disability or prolonged suffering of the animal.
The man also faces a maximum of five years on each count of possession of child pornography, as well as one count of grooming a child under the age of 16.
