A man has been jailed for the brutal assault by an Uber driver who saw the victim choke and beat him until he was temporarily blind in one eye.

Rideshare driver Moiz Akash picked up Zachary Gartrell, 22, on June 19 in the Perth suburb of Koongamia.

Gartell was already out on bail for other serious crimes, including the alleged assault on two transit guards.

Horrific dashcam footage from Mr Akash’s car shows the violent young man repeatedly beating the Uber driver – who has vowed never to drive again.

Gartrell slammed the car door against another vehicle as he entered, asking the Uber driver to tell him to calm down.

He then throws punches repeatedly as the driver cringes in the front seat. After a few moments, the attacker then puts Mr Akash in a headlock – forcing the driver to bite his fingers to break free.

The driver claimed he could not breathe for more than 10 seconds when the stranger strangled him.

Akash said he initially installed the dashcam in his car because he happened to be attacked while he was at work.

Gartrell then spat in his face, before chasing the driver down the street, yelling, “I’m going to kill you,” Perth’s Magistrate Court heard Wednesday.

It was revealed that he was already out on bail for biting and spitting blood on a transit officer.

The 22-year-old attacker was jailed for 19 months for the attacks.

Meanwhile, Akash told Seven News that he thought he was “done” during the terrifying ordeal.

“I was lucky to escape … that was a terrible experience in my life,” he said.

The driver has vowed never to work for Uber again.
