A patient undergoing routine surgery suffered severe burns after the operating room caught fire.

The patient is understood to have been undergoing a skin procedure at St John of God Subiaco Hospital, near Perth’s CBD, on Tuesday when the room caught fire.

The cause of the fire remains a mystery and health chiefs have now launched an urgent investigation.

Specific details of the incident have been withheld due to privacy laws, however it was confirmed on Friday that the patient is being treated at Fiona Stanley Hospital, which has a specialist burn unit.

They remain in critical but stable condition.

A patient undergoing a routine operation at the San Juan de Dios Subiaco Hospital (above) was severely burned after a fire broke out in the theater.

It is not known if anyone else was injured in the fire.

Interim CEO of St John of God Subiaco Hospital, Jenny Brenton, said it was a “serious incident” that resulted in an “adverse patient outcome.”

“The patient has been transferred to a tertiary hospital to receive specialized care,” it said in a statement.

We inform the patient’s family of the situation immediately after the incident and recognize that this is a difficult time for them.

“We have begun a full investigation and analysis to determine the cause. We will continue to keep the patient and family informed as this progresses.
