A spontaneous trip abroad has become a vacation from hell for a miner in Perth who allegedly stabbed and beaten in an unprovoked attack.
Luke Jeffers, 26, underwent 21 hours of surgery and remains in intensive care after he was reportedly assaulted outside a nightclub in Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur.
Footage filmed by shocked onlookers shows the Western Australian outnumbered and attacked by a group of at least five men.
With gaping wounds to his neck and shoulder, he fell backwards and fell to the ground, lying in a pool of blood.
Jeffers suffered a fractured C3 vertebra in his back, a three-inch gash on the left side of his neck, a large laceration to his shoulder and a serious, life-changing laceration to his left hand.

His mother Jo and grandmother have traveled from Perth to rush to his hospital bed.
Jeffers is in stable condition but will spend an “indefinite amount of time” in intensive care, according to his sister Brooke.
She has set up an online fundraiser to help with rising medical bills and to transport her brother home.
“Unfortunately, as this was such a last minute trip, Luke didn’t have travel insurance,” she wrote.
“The medical bills, ongoing rehab and what it will cost to get him home with help from a doctor is an expense our family was not prepared for.”

More than $50,000 was raised in 24 hours when the online fundraiser was inundated with messages from benefactors.
“The response so far has been amazing and we are so grateful and eternally grateful to everyone who has donated and shared,” Ms. Jeffers posted on Facebook.
Police in Malaysia have arrested three men, aged 20-30, in connection with the alleged brawl.
They are still in custody and are due to appear in court on Tuesday.
Police will allege that one of the men used a sharp object to cause injuries to Jeffers’ neck, torso and hands.
Further arrests have not been ruled out as the investigation continues.
