Perth influencer Mea Jasmin shocked by outrageous price – but not everyone is on her side
An influencer who was shocked by the huge amount she was charged for a portion of smashed avocado on toast and a sandwich has divided the internet.
Mea Jasmin was stunned when she paid $40 for a takeaway breakfast meal from a Perth cafe last weekend.
The influencer expressed her disbelief in a TikTok video captioned “The cost of living is a joke in Australia,” showing the contents of takeaway containers as she slowly exhaled.
“I’m not going to say anything, but I ordered smashed avo. I ordered smashed avo, and that’s exactly what I got,” she said.
“I’m trying not to laugh.”
The package contained two slices of toast with avocado on the side, with a garnish that looked like dukkah or nuts.
The influencer then opened the second container.
“I got a vegan eggplant sandwich. I paid $40, guys. I’m going to leave it at that. Maybe it tastes amazing,” she said.

The sandwich appeared to consist of two slices of tomato, mashed avocado, and a slice of eggplant.
Many viewers called the cost ‘extreme’ and couldn’t believe it. She couldn’t believe she had ordered and paid for expensive takeaway food.
“Didn’t you see the price before you ordered?” someone responded.
Another added: ‘The problem here is that you paid. I would have said no thanks and left.’
A third wrote: ‘The problem is that if we pay that, they will continue to ask for it.’
Mea told her followers: ‘The heartbreaking thing was that this was my favourite breakfast place for FIVE YEARS and they had just changed hands. What I got compared to what I had gotten before was shocking to say the least.’
The influencer added that she normally spends a lot of time preparing meals, but there are days when she just can’t get to it.
Many Australians urged the influencer to eat at home more and pay a fraction of the cost.
‘See, I wouldn’t pay that amount… Cook at home. It often tastes better too!’ wrote one.
Mea replied: ‘I totally agree with you mate! I also cook 90 percent of my meals at home, so it’s quite a disappointment when you end up eating out and it doesn’t live up to your expectations.’
The influencer posted his message at a time when many catering companies are having a hard time after the corona crisis.
CreditorWatch predicted that 9.1 percent of businesses in the distressed sector will go bust in the next 12 months as customers become even more vigilant about their spending, especially if interest rates do not fall.
