A Perth father was found lying in a pool of blood in a Bali cafe after a drunken argument ended with a chair hitting him on the head.

Troy Scott Johnston, 40, was found by his wife at the Uncle Benz cafe in south Kuta, Indonesia, around 4am on Thursday morning.

He was rushed to Bimc Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The cafe’s owner, Gede Wijaya, 20, was charged with murder by Indonesian police, though he insisted he had no intention of killing Johnson.

Wijaya claimed that Mr Johnston was drunk and “lost control”, before trying to calm him down.

“He was drunk and he lost control… I tried to calm him down,” Wijaya said.

“I’m so sorry, I (didn’t) have any intention of hurting him.”

However, police allege that Wijaya was also drinking before the fight broke out.

Mr. Johnston was on vacation with his wife Ni Nyoman Purnianti and their young son.

She told police that her husband went out drinking one night around 7:30 p.m.

“At 10:30 p.m. Purnianti contacted Scott and he responded that he was still drinking,” police said.

She then took her brother to pick up her husband when he wasn’t home at 3:45 am.

Wijaya was arrested and told police that Johnston was drunk and had been “throwing bottles in the street”.

“Wijaya was attacked and beaten, they both struggled on the ground, Scott got up quickly, grabbed a chair and threw it at Wijaya,” police alleged.

The cafe owner allegedly grabbed the chair from Johnston’s hand and hit his head, causing him to fall with serious head injuries.

Wijaya faces 15 years in jail in Indonesia if convicted of murder.
