A Virgin Australia plane was forced to make an emergency landing after burning fuel in the same airspace for nearly two hours.

Virgin flight VA469 was scheduled to depart Perth for Brisbane on Wednesday.

But the flight had to be aborted due to a technical problem, and passengers were told there was a problem with the Boeing 737’s hydraulic wing flaps.

The aircraft circled Rottnest Island and off the Perth coast to burn fuel and await clearance to land.

Due to the nature of the technical problem, the pilot could only use the brakes when landing.

Airport fire crews were on the scene in case the plane caught fire.

The Boeing 737 landed at the airport safely at around 3:05 p.m.

Engineers are now looking at the plane, which will remain on the ground.
