A personal trainer has revealed how he “got his body back” after losing 17kg when he contracted a bacterial infection from drinking tank water and ended up in hospital.
Dylan Rivier, 40, from Sydney, posted on instagram recalling the experience he had in 2013 when he was working at a music festival in Byron Bay.
He said he lost 17kg of muscle in just four weeks when he was “in the hospital sick with AF,” and it took “nearly a full 12 months to get my strength and fitness back.”

Dylan wrote: ‘First pic is me almost 10 years ago, in hospital sick with AF after drinking water that had nasty bacteria in it. The second photo is how I looked exactly eight weeks earlier.’
He added: ‘I haven’t weighed this light since high school. My mineral and protein levels were at an all time low, my blood pressure was 90/40 and my heart rate was 96, all big problems in the land of personal trainers.’
Dylan said: “It took almost a full 12 months to get my strength and fitness back up, I cleaned up my diet and had to take my training to level one, but eventually I got there and I haven’t stopped.”
Dylan said that just eight weeks before he got sick (pictured), he was as fit as ever (pictured before at the gym).
To ‘rebuild his body again’, the Bondi Beach personal trainer said he made his nutrition a priority like ‘never before’ (pictured after), specifically targeting gut health.

“I bought fresh produce at farmers markets and made sure everything I bought was organic and locally sourced,” she previously told FEMAIL.
“I also treated myself like one of my clients, starting their fitness journey all over again.”
Dylan added apple cider vinegar to his diet, which he takes with some kind of “green powder” first thing in the morning.
Elsewhere, he prioritized plenty of protein throughout the day, via poached eggs, canned tuna sandwiches, grilled chicken salads, and Greek yogurt.
“You can be training hard, but if you don’t supplement it with good nutrition, or if you drink too much, you’re not going to see much progress at all,” Dylan previously told FEMAIL.
“I do a lot of ab exercises to help strengthen and tone my midsection, but if there’s a layer of fat on top of my abs, I won’t see it.”
He added: ‘If you want to see your abs, you need to cut down on refined sugar, watch your alcohol intake.
And keep your diet fairly balanced when it comes to fat, carbs, and protein.
“My advice to people who want to see results is to find what works for you and stick with it,” Dylan said.

Dylan supplemented his clean diet with training sessions five to six times a week.
He said he had to develop this frequency as when he started to recover, he couldn’t train more than three times a week.
Today, Dylan does a variety of workouts, including HITT sessions, steady state soft sand runs, outdoor workouts that combine pull-ups, push-ups, squats, straight leg raises, and runs.

Dylan says that you can “achieve the body of your dreams simply by using your own body weight and an accessory or two”:
“I like to do HIIT, or steady-state running on soft sand at my Bondi beach house to shed stubborn belly fat,” he said.
The 37-year-old also loves outdoor exercises that combine pull-ups, push-ups, squats, straight leg raises and runs, and he does frequent circuit training using his own body weight for support.
“If you live in Australia, we’re already blessed with some of the most incredible outdoor training venues in the world,” Dylan said.
“I guess the point of all this is to serve as a reminder to anyone who has fallen off the fitness bandwagon and isn’t sure how to get back on.
It is definitely possible, although sometimes you feel like there is no way. At the end of the day, our fitness journeys should last a lifetime. They are not just 12-week programs or six-month memberships.
“They’re something you should be able to do for the rest of your life, and that’s what I plan to do.”
