The perfect Good Friday fakeaway: Fitness coach reveals how to make your own healthier version of Macca’s Fillet-O-fish burger and homemade tartar sauce

A fitness coach has revealed how she makes her own McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish burgers, which are the perfect budget meal for Good Friday.

According to Catholic tradition, many Christians abstain from red meat on Good Friday and indulge in fish, according to health guru Bec Hardgrave shared her cheap and simple recipe.

The 248-calorie burgers require just four ingredients, including three budget buys from Aldi and a McDonald’s imitation tartar sauce that Bec makes herself.

She picks up a 12-pack of brioche sliders, Westacre Dairy cheese sandwich slices for $3.99, and Ocean Royale crumbled whiting bites.

Bec places the fish snacks in the air fryer until they are crispy and golden brown and prepares the sandwiches while they cook.

For the tartar sauce, Bec combines a cup of Hellman’s light egg mayonnaise, a tablespoon of very finely chopped brown onion, pickle relish, chopped capers and dried parsley, as well as a teaspoon of salt and sugar.

She mixes all the ingredients well and then pours the sauce into a squeeze bottle for storage.

Bec finishes her burgers by adding a fish bite to each bun and a 15-gram dollop of her tartar sauce.

Each burger has only 248 calories with 9 grams, only 12.3 grams of fat and 25.8 grams of carbohydrates.

‘I’m craving the tartar sauce! Every time we buy nuggets from Maccas, I get the tartar sauce as an option so I can make my own fish burgers. I’d like to try yours,” one woman said.

“We will definitely be making these for our family picnic on Friday,” another commented.

Filet-O-Fish is my favorite! So love the Mac tartar sauce!” a third wrote.

‘Cutting the sandwiches without taking them apart first!! How did I never think of that before?’ someone added.
