Per capita grain consumption under 10 kg in rural areas in 2022-2023: survey

Monthly per capita grain consumption in rural areas was less than 10 kg in 2022-2023, according to the latest Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) report released on Friday by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI) .

Consumption of food grains in rural households fell to 9.61 kg in 2022-23 from 11.23 kg in 2011-12, while in urban households it fell to 9.32 kg in the same period to 8.05 kg.

The data shows that rural foodgrains consumption was highest in West Bengal (11.23 kg), followed by Odisha (11.21 kg), Bihar (11.14 kg), Rajasthan (10.55 kg ) and Chattisgarh (10.27 kg). Among urban areas, people in Bihar consumed the most food grains (10.45 kg), followed by Chhattisgarh (10.43 kg), Jharkhand (9.59 kg) and Rajasthan (9.50 kg).

Among cereals, the share of rice in rural areas was 55.35 percent, followed by (40.93 percent) and coarse grains (3.48 percent). Similarly, in urban areas, the share of rice in grain consumption was 53.20 percent, followed by wheat (44.53 percent) and coarse grains (2.09 percent).

Earlier in February, MoSPI published a fact sheet on consumer spending, which showed that average expenditure on non-food items by rural India crossed the 50 percent mark for the first time in 2022-23, with a decline in the share of total expenses. now assigned to food products.

The survey results released after eleven years show that expenditure on food in rural India, as a percentage of monthly per capita expenditure (MPCE), has fallen from 52.9 percent in 2011-12 to 46 .38 percent in 2022-2023. In urban India, this share fell further from 42.62 percent in 2011-2012 to 39.17 percent in 2022-2023.

The latest unit figures released on Friday are expected to play a crucial role in assessing critical economic indicators such as the consumer price index (CPI), gross domestic product (GDP) and poverty levels.

According to the latest survey, the average MPCE in Indian households has increased by 33.5 percent in urban households since 2011-12 to Rs 3,510, while the MPCE in rural India saw a 40.42 percent increase to Rs 2,008 during the same period .
