A Pennsylvania woman who started her career scrubbing toilets at McDonald’s now owns 12 of the chain’s restaurants.
Tanya Hill-Holliday spent 44 years climbing the corporate ladder at McDonald’s after joining the crew at a Baltimore restaurant in 1980.
‘I was told I wasn’t allowed to be here. I was called every name but my name,” Hill-Holliday said CBS News Philadelphia.
“But I kept my head down and kept working,” she explained.
After serving in thirteen different positions within the company, including vice president, Hill-Holliday took her stock options and purchased her first restaurant, the Rosemont McDonald’s next to Villanova University, in 2005.

“I picked up the Yellow Pages at the time, was looking through it and saw a mention of McDonald’s,” she recalls.
“I always enjoyed what I did, no matter how hard it was to hear, ‘You have to clean a table, you have to clean the toilets, you have to scrub the baseboards.’ I did it,” she explained.
The Hill-Holliday franchise is now worth about $1.5 million, and she oversees more than 600 employees.
She is also president of the National Black McDonald’s Operators Association and CEO of 168 entities in the US

Hill-Holiday says she hopes her journey inspires young people working on their first jobs.
“Stay motivated, stay encouraged, stay prayed. “I stay in prayer all the time,” she added.
