The film sees the actress’s character end up in a psychiatric institution, and during a press conference at the Venice Film Festival, Penelope opened up about the realities of domestic violence.
“I don’t think my character is crazy at all,” Cruz said, according to Variety.

He added: “I used to think that the more I suffered, the better the performance was going to be.”
“But once I had my children, I decided to work more with my imagination and less forcing something from my real life. In my 20s or 30s, before I was a mother, I would force my personal traumatic experiences a bit.
“Now, I feel like that doesn’t necessarily improve the outcome, but it makes your life healthier to separate fiction and reality.”
