The Last of Us series is an adaptation of the beloved 2013 video game of the same name, developed by Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann, who also co-created the TV series with Craig Mazin (Chernobyl).

The widely popular show, which has 40 million viewers in the US alone, was commissioned for series two in January this year.

The premiere aired on January 15 and drew 4.7 million viewers, with the 8.2 million viewers for the finale representing a stunning 75% increase from premiere to finale.

The Last of Us is also the most watched show in HBO Max history in both Europe and Latin America.

It follows Joel (Pedro) and 14-year-old Ellie (Bella) on their travels in a post-apocalyptic world, where 60% of the population dies from a parasitic Cordyceps or fungal infection.

The infection – inspired by the real life ophiocordyceps unilateralis – has four stages of infection, making humans increasingly resemble zombie-like monsters that use echolocation.

Ellie is miraculously immune to the Cordyceps infection, and the pair travel from a quarantine area in Boston all the way to the West Coast to help the lab where a cure is being developed.

The Last of Us also features Nick Offerman, Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, and Anna Torv.

It’s been a big week for Pedro after the trailer for his new film with director Pedro Almodóvar, Strange Way of Life, was released this week.
