National Narcotics Agency spokesman Sulistyo Pudjo Hartono said they have been trying to track down Haas since 5kg of methamphetamine was allegedly found at an undisclosed location in December.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said he opposed the death penalty and said he would speak to the Prime Minister and Attorney General about the matter.

Daily Mail Australia is not suggesting anyone else in the Haas family is involved.

Payne’s mother, Joan Taufua, is in custody charged with manslaughter after a car she was riding in killed three people in 2022.

Payne has been caring for his two younger brothers ever since. The Broncos have rallied behind Payne after the latest family incident. Brisbane coach Kevin Walters says the club supports Haas “in every way possible”.

‘Payne is a very strong individual and so is his family. A lot of people probably don’t understand or realize who Payne is,” Walters said.

β€œHe’s a great guy, a great family man and at this time he’s going through, we’ll try to get around him in any way we can to support him and his family. That’s all we can do.

“Payne is just such a wonderful person of integrity … and what he does with his family, even before this incident, is something that we should have great respect for.”

Payne left the field in the 60th minute of the Bronco’s one-point win over Manly on Friday night with a lower leg injury before returning to the field 14 minutes later to finish the match.
