Paul Scholes has hit out at Manchester United winger Antony after the Brazilian hit club legends for 'never giving constructive criticism'.

United face the prospect of a seventh Premier League defeat of the season when they host Chelsea tonight, and Scholes has responded to the player's comments.

The Brazilian has endured mixed form since joining United in an £85million contract from Ajax last summer. He initially made a good impression with a goal against Arsenal on his debut, but struggled for the most part during his second season in English football.

Like many of the players in Erik ten Hag's squad, Antony has been heavily criticized by former players, with Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Scholes all critical at times.

Antony has now hit back at the pundits for their lack of support, without offering anything positive, and Scholes has responded by offering the Brazilian some simple advice.

Responding to Mail Sport's story on his Instagram story, Scholes said: 'Run up and down as fast as you can, score goals and score goals, pls. Good luck tonight, my friend.”

Scholes' instructions telling the 23-year-old to 'run' could be seen as a response to comments from former United captain Roy Keane, who singled out Marcus Rashford for his lack of effort in the recent defeat to Newcastle.

United's players looked largely in disarray against Newcastle as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat, with the scoreline largely flattering the Ten Hag side's performance.

Antony has made just 14 appearances for United this season but has yet to find a goal or register an assist this term.

He will hope to be involved against Chelsea given United's problems in the wide department, with Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Pellitri all struggling to make an impact in recent games.

Antony's first comments explaining the views of former players read: 'Today I see criticism coming from former club players and other people in the media, who express their opinions unreasonably and influence thousands of fans, sometimes even when I am not playing .

'But I've never seen them give constructive criticism that could help me become a better professional.

“None of them have ever messaged me to ask how I'm feeling, especially during this period of turbulence I'm going through.”
