Paul Scholes has negatively rated one of Manchester United’s summer signings after the dismal 3-0 defeat to Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Spurs were in complete control of the match in Manchester on Sunday afternoon and should have been more than 1-0 up when United captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off in the 42nd minute for a foul on James Maddison.

Brennan Johnson gave Spurs the lead in the third minute after a stunning assist from Micky van de Ven. Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke then scored goals against United’s ten men in the second half, but Spurs also missed several big chances to score more.

Sunday’s result leaves United with just seven points from their opening six Premier League games this season, and it comes after a huge summer of recruitment. Scholes believes Matthijs de Ligt, signed from Bayern Munich for £43m, has made no difference to United’s defence.

‘When you bring in players, you expect them to be a lot better than the players you already have. I don’t see players coming in who will make a big difference,” the former midfielder told SuperSport.

‘De Ligt has come on for Maguire, let’s say, but there is no big difference.

Asked whether the Dutchman is an upgrade over former club captain Maguire, Scholes replied: ‘No, absolutely not.’

Earlier in his tirade, Scholes was not reserved in his assessment of United under Erik ten Hag: ‘You don’t know how they are going to play.

‘You don’t know how they are going to approach games, whether they are going to play on the counter-attack or whether they are going to sit deep or whether they are going to try to have all the ball in the game. We have no idea. They look like an uncoached football team.

‘It’s been two and a bit years now… from the first week Ange Postecoglou came in, we probably knew what Tottenham were doing and they do it to this day.

‘We are two and a bit years later [at United] and, like I said, it’s an uncoached team.

‘The players looked dead today, they looked flat, they looked: ‘I don’t know what to do’, there is no enthusiasm for the game of football and that can only come from the training pitch.

“Some of the positions people take on the field are just madness sometimes.”
