Paul Scholes has identified a major problem facing the current Manchester United team: once they concede, the floodgates often open.

United conceded two goals in two quick bursts as they fell 4-3 to Copenhagen in the Champions League.

It’s becoming a common occurrence for United this season: they leaked quick doubles in their previous Champions League appearances against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray and have been prone to the same problem in the competition.

Against Arsenal, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, Erik ten Hag’s men let go twice in quick succession as they fell into disarray.

Scholes told TNT Sports: “I thought they showed fight after Rashford was wrongly sent off until the 83rd minute. Where you could say they break down somewhat is that as soon as they admit one, they immediately admit another. It happened at 2-0 and it happened again.

‘Dalot sleeps at the back post (for the third goal). He needs to know where his attacking player is.

‘But then I don’t think there is any character in the team. They have the (former) England captain and Raphael Varane, so much experience in the team, saying: “Okay, come on, okay, we’ve conceded a goal, relax, make sure we don’t concede another goal” .

“It doesn’t seem like there’s that organization, that leader in there, that can stop the second target and they have paid the ultimate price.”

The result leaves Manchester United bottom of the Champions League group and requires big performances against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich.

Later in the month they travel to Istanbul to try to avenge the Turkish champions’ victory at Old Trafford, before hosting already-qualified Bayern at Old Trafford in December.
