Paul Scholes claims Manchester United’s performance in their Premier League season opener against Fulham was no improvement on last season.
United won 1-0 at Old Trafford thanks to new signing Joshua Zirkzee, who scored the only goal of the game in the 87th minute.
However, United legend Scholes was less than impressed with the performances of Erik ten Hag’s team.
United showed little consistency last season and finished eighth in the Premier League.
However, Scholes suggested United need to step it up a notch.

Erik ten Hag’s team won 1-0 against Fulham, but Scholes said they could have played better
According to Scholes, United were too attacking against Fulham and left too much space in midfield.
Speaking at the Overlap Fan Debate, hosted by Sky BettingScholes said: ‘With Manchester United’s opening game against Fulham I didn’t see much difference to their performance last season. I thought they did well and they deserved to win the game, but there were still plenty of moments where there was a lot of space in central midfield.
‘The problem with United is that every time they have the ball they try to attack and that’s not good.
Joshua Zirkzee scored in the closing stages but Scholes felt United had left too much space in midfield
‘Sometimes you need five minutes on the ball to take the sting out of the game, but constant attacking results in end-to-end football. If you look at Manchester City and their midfield, they take the sting out of the game and kill opponents that way, but at United there is so much chaos with players running everywhere.’
United have been very active in the transfer market this summer as they look to strengthen their squad.
In addition to Zirkzee, United have also acquired defenders Matthijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich.
Leny Yoro joined from Lille, but suffered a fractured metatarsal.
Ten Hag’s team will be back in action against Brighton on Saturday.
