Paul Pogba’s hopes of being fit for the World Cup are reportedly all but over due to his latest injury setback.
The French midfielder will have to miss another three weeks, according to L’Équipe, due to a thigh problem, effectively banning him from the tournament in Qatar.
French boss Didier Deschamps has said he will only select players who are eligible for their first World Cup match with Australia on November 22.
Pogba’s chances of making the roster were hanging by a thread, but the latest development seems to confirm that he will definitely lose his race against the clock.
Paul Pogba appears to be banned from the World Cup after sustaining another injury
Reports close to the Frenchman state that the 29-year-old suffered another injury while recovering from an existing knee problem, which has prevented him from playing a competitive game for Juventus since he rejoined the club in the summer.
Pogba was out for nearly two months after undergoing surgery on his right knee in September.
The surgeon who performed Pogba’s surgery reportedly revealed that he and doctors had agreed on a ‘necessary’ recovery time of eight weeks before the Frenchman can return to first-team training.
It was still hoped that he would recover in time for the tournament’s start on November 20.
Deschamps previously warned Pogba, who returned to Juventus after a bitter departure from Manchester United, that he would only select the midfielder if he was fully fit and in top form.
“He’s not just coming because he’s a ‘framework’,” the French manager said in September.
“If he hasn’t played before and isn’t in top form, there’s no point. He doesn’t want it himself.’
