Mescal, an avowed fan of Bridgers before their first meeting, began dating the talented musician in 2020, shortly after the notable BBC drama Normal People made him a household name.

Bridgers has since been linked to comedian Bo Burnham following a reported split in December, and Mescal admits that questions about their previous relationship are unwanted.

He said: ‘I’m definitely tempted to say the status of my whatever, that’s always going to be there. But I don’t think it’s a wise thing to do.

‘When Normal People came out, I was very direct in the interviews, and it didn’t really help me. But there is still the temptation to say: “Shut the fuck up. This is my life. This is what is happening. Or this is what is happening”.

‘But move as far as I can, that will be my private life. That is a difficult thing to achieve. But giving an answer to strangers about my life doesn’t really help me.
