Paul Merson has declared for the second week in a row that he would be shocked if Tottenham beat their Premier League opponents.

Ange Postecoglou’s side face Wolves on Saturday after suffering their first league defeat of the season, losing 4-1 to Chelsea on Monday.

Merson hit back earlier this week at ‘clueless critics’ who mocked him for suggesting Chelsea would beat Spurs upon Mauricio Pochettino’s return to the club.

The former Arsenal and England midfielder has now explained why he thinks Wolves will hand Tottenham their second defeat in a row – predicting a 2-1 win for Gary O’Neil’s side.

He told Sportkeeda: ‘I will be shocked if Tottenham beat Wolves on Saturday with their injuries and suspensions. I looked at Spurs’ situation and they have some serious injuries.

‘Micky van de Ven is out and they have Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie who have to miss a few weeks due to suspension. James Maddison will also be absent and Richarlison will undergo surgery.

‘Ange Postecoglou will field a makeshift backline and they will not be the same team that had a flying start to the season due to their injuries.’

Van de Ven went off against Chelsea with a hamstring issue, with the Dutchman expected to face an extended spell on the sidelines – although he is reportedly not expected to require surgery.

Maddison also limped off against Chelsea, while Richarlison has undergone surgery on a pelvic injury.

Despite Spurs’ excellent form ahead of the match against Chelsea, Merson – a fan of the Stamford Bridge club – admitted a win against Tottenham would ‘shock’ him.

“I have a lot of confidence in Chelsea on Monday evening,” Merson told Sky Sports. “I’ll be shocked if they lose.”

The former Arsenal and England star successfully predicted that Spurs would take on Chelsea and hit back against those who ridiculed his confidence in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Tottenham showed a lack of discipline as Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero were sent off to Postecoglou’s side

Several fans were quick to mock the former England star on social media, with one Tottenham supporter writing on X, formerly known as Twitter: ‘If we beat Chelsea, Paul Merson should retire as a pundit.’

Merson bit back with an amusing response after Chelsea’s win, replying: ‘You’ll have to put up with me for at least another four to one years. COYB.’

He also said in a separate post: ‘All those people who have been calling me clueless, I hope you’re going to bed. COYB.’
