Paul Merson SLAMS Chelsea’s poor form given the talent they have available

‘It has to be one of the worst runs in football history’: Paul Merson BEATS Chelsea’s poor form given the talent they have available…while admitting he was ‘not even shocked’ when Chelsea’s side Frank Lampard was defeated by Wolves

  • Chelsea were defeated 1-0 on Saturday by the relegation-threatened Wolves
  • They are now eleventh in the league and closer to relegation than the top four
  • Paul Merson said the club were on ‘one of the worst runs in football history’

Paul Merson did not hold back his criticism of Chelsea after they lost 1-0 in the first game of Frank Lampard’s second period in charge on Saturday.

The Blues have now taken just one point and no goals from their last three games, a run they’ve seen through three different managers.

Despite spending more than £300 million on new players in January, they are closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League places with eight games to play.

Merson was stunned by the collapse of form, as he recounted Sky Sports: ‘You can’t, it’s insane. It has to be one of the worst runs in football history with so much talent in the side.

“They pick up international players who have played 50 international matches, not someone who has never played for their country.”

The expert also felt the West London side lacked a clear plan, continuing: ‘Lampard have only had a few days to work with them but there is no pattern.

“You see Man City and Arsenal play and you can see what is trying to happen. With Chelsea there is nothing. They are 11 individuals.

“No one really moves for anyone, there’s no substitution, no one runs when they know they’re never going to get the ball. It’s a worrying time right now. It has nothing to do with the managers, it’s the players who have to stand up for themselves.

“Chelsea tore teams apart a few years ago and now you go to Wolves and I’m not even surprised they got beat.”

Despite their poor league form, the Blues still have an unlikely chance of silverware this season.

They remain in the Champions League and will meet Real Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-final on Wednesday.

It will be a tough task to beat a side with such European experience after a poor run, but Chelsea have been far from favorites in both of their previous wins in the tournament.

The next league game is next Saturday against Brighton.
