Paul Merson SLAMS Chelsea’s attitude to Mason Mount following stalled contract talks
‘You don’t get rid of your best players’: Paul Merson SLAMS Chelsea’s ‘bad business’ attitude towards Mason Mount following stalled contract talks with the midfielder as they warn selling him could turn rivals like Liverpool into a ‘team that aspires to the title’ ‘
Paul Merson has urged Chelsea to ‘give Mason Mount what he’s asking for’ amid stalled contract renewal talks.
The England midfielder has 12 months left on his current contract with the club, and he recently hinted that he may be looking to leave the club by naming a new agent.
He has been with the club since he was six years old and made 192 first-team appearances, but is now being hunted by Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool as his time at Stamford Bridge appears to be drawing to a close.
Merson felt that Todd Boehly should do more to keep the 24-year-old, calling the club’s current attitude a “bad deal”.
Mason Mount was by far the best player for Chelsea last season. He was outstanding,’ the former Arsenal man said in his Sky Sports column.
Mason Mount’s contract talks with Chelsea have made little progress in recent weeks.
‘It’s different when you reach the ranks of a football club because you don’t cost anything. When they buy you for a lot of money, they see you more as an asset.
The midfielder has collected the player of the season award with the Blues in each of the last two seasons and scored 13 goals in all competitions in 2021/2.
Merson went on to argue that losing Mount would likely strengthen an opponent, adding: “You don’t dump your best players.” There are so many players that need to be sent out of this Chelsea team before Mount.
‘The child can play. It’s bad business for Chelsea, they should give him what he’s asking for.
“If Liverpool go and get Mount and then Jude Bellingham, who could also go to Liverpool, you have a title contender.”
Paul Merson urged Chelsea to do more to keep the 24-year-old midfielder at Stamford Bridge.
The expert warned that Mount could strengthen a rival like Liverpool if he leaves the club
Why would you want to risk it if you’re Chelsea? Why would you make them stronger?
Mount has struggled this season in a difficult season for Graham Potter’s side, scoring just three goals as the Blues have slipped to tenth in the league.
They have enjoyed a resurgence in recent weeks after qualifying for the Champions League round of 16 and picking up back-to-back league victories, but suffered a disappointing 2-2 draw against Everton in their last game before the international break.
Chelsea will be in action when they take on Aston Villa on April 1.
