‘If Man United want to come close to winning a title, they NEED a Harry Kane’: Paul Merson urges Erik ten Hag’s team to spend £100m on Spurs’ talisman, insisting striker ‘can play until 37’ at the highest level
Manchester United should “spend £100m” on Spurs striker Harry Kane if they want to start “winning titles”, according to Paul Merson.
Despite recent reports suggesting the England captain is content with his stay in north London, questions remain about his future as his current contract expires in 2024.
With that in mind, Merson suggested that Erik ten Hag’s side should do everything they can to sign the Tottenham star, labeling Kane “the best centre-forward in the world”.
Pundit Paul Merson has urged superstar Harry Kane to leave Tottenham in search of trophies.
Merson suggested Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United should bid ‘£100m’ for the striker
speaking to sky sports, Merson said: ‘Is Harry Kane going for individual records or medals? I don’t see him winning anything at Tottenham.
“He’s going to break Jimmy Greaves’ goalscoring record, which is a phenomenal feat. He has a chance to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League record at Tottenham.
“Tottenham have been good to Kane, at the same time that Kane has been good to Tottenham. He has children, he is married, he has to play where he is happy. Would you like to change all that?
Recent reports have suggested that Kane is open to signing a new contract in north London despite his continued quest for trophies throughout his playing career.
The English striker scored the only goal of the night in Spurs’ recent 1-0 win over Fulham.
Merson claimed Kane ‘is the best center forward in the world’ after his recent performances
“He is the best center forward in the world. If I’m Manchester United, I’ll spend £100m on Kane tomorrow. They just paid £80m for Antony and he won’t score as many goals in 10 years as Kane would in one season with Manchester United,” Merson continued.
“Kane can play until he’s 37 because he doesn’t have to have rhythm, his game is not about rhythm.” He has the brains, he can fall short, find the passes and score the goals. He has it all.
‘If Man Utd want to come close to winning a title, they need a Kane. Seeing them against Arsenal, they are still a long way off.
Kane to Chelsea? That can’t happen. If he comes to Chelsea, he loses his legacy at Tottenham. Tottenham fans would go crazy. For him, going to Chelsea would be the next step after going to Arsenal. Chelsea and Tottenham don’t get along.
Kane has spent his entire senior playing career at Spurs and is yet to win a trophy with them.
The England captain showed his mettle for Tottenham during their 1-0 win over Fulham in the Premier League on Monday night.
Kane scored the only goal of the night after picking up the ball on the edge of the box, turning and firing a shot into the bottom corner of the net.
In doing so, the striker raised his Tottenham tally to 266 and on the same level as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer Jimmy Greaves.
Bayern Munich have also been linked with a move for Kane, but former German club president Uli Hoeness doubts they can afford Tottenham’s £130m asking price.
