Paul Konchesky leaves role as West Ham manager after just one year in charge

Paul Konchesky leaves the role as West Ham manager after just one year at the helm following poor form…

  • Konchesky leaves his role a year into what was a two-year contract
  • He won three of his first five games, but has not won in his last 10
  • It was the former defender’s decision to step down rather than the club’s

Paul Konchesky has left his role as West Ham manager after just one season.

Konchesky signed a two-year contract in the summer of 2022 and won three of his first five games in charge. But a run of poor form early in the year saw the Hammers go 10 games without a win.

After ending the WSL season with a 3-3 draw against Tottenham on Saturday, it was announced that Konchesky would be leaving his role as manager on Sunday morning.

Konchesky’s departure was his decision, not the club’s, despite the 42-year-old still having one year left on his contract.

“I am proud and honored to have been given the opportunity to lead this club,” Konchesky said in a statement.

Konchesky thanked his team and staff in a statement after leaving his post on Sunday

“My players and staff have always given 100% to me and although some of our results this season have been disappointing, we still have a lot to be proud of, including reaching the semi-finals of the Conti Cup. I wish the club all the best good for the future.’

West Ham’s poor form from January to May was highlighted on social media by long-serving Kate Longhurst – who also confirmed her departure from the club this week.

“Never in my entire career have I felt so unconfident and destroyed as at the moment,” Longhurst said after the defeat to Brighton this month.

The former defender is embarking on a coaching career after retiring from the game

“If anyone thinks we don’t care, you’re wrong. We as players have stuck together and supported each other no matter what.

“We need something to change, to bring that belief back and we hope we can do that soon. We don’t represent the club the way we want, but we want to change that.’

Konchesky has been part of the women’s formation since 2021, first joining as a coach before taking on his first full-time management role following the departure of Olli Harder last summer.

He has previously spoken of his desire to be in the game ‘for a long time’ and it is clear that he will try to continue his coaching career.
