Plenty of stories pertaining to Paul Green’s caring nature have poured in following news of his death, and one journalist has lifted the lid on a generous act which truly showed the premiership-winning coach’s kind heart.

Green, 49, was found dead at his home in Brisbane this morning, leaving behind his wife Amanda and children Jed and Emerson. Queensland police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

In the wake of Green’s death, a huge number of his former teammates as well as personalities from the wider world of rugby league have made emotional tributes to the ex-Cowboys coach.

Wendell Sailor admitted he has been ‘crying all day’ while supercoach Wayne Bennett said news of his death was ‘simply unbelievable’.

And now, a journalist covering the Broncos during Green’s time with the NRL club has lifted the lid on an act of generosity that has only become known in the hours since his shock death.

‘Wrote a story for a newspaper about a struggling family robbed of everything, including their kid’s footy gear, who wasn’t well,’ Jason Gee wrote on Twitter.

‘Paul Green, at the Broncos then, called looking for contact details, to send them footy gear, [and] asked us not to do a story on it. Champion person.’

Elsewhere, stars of footy past and present have come out in their droves to write kind words for Green.

Tigers star Jackson Hastings wrote that he ‘couldn’t believe’ the news, while Cowboys half Chad Townsend said that his ‘thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family’.

Green’s former teammate and close friend Martin Lang said the news was ‘so sad’, after revealing the pair moved to Sydney together in 1993 for the beginning of the duo’s elite rugby league careers.

Queensland legend Cameron Smith also paid tribute to Green.

‘It’s very sad news,’ he told SEN.

‘He was a premiership coach of course with the North Queensland Cowboys in 2015.

‘It’s a very sad day for all involved with the rugby league family and the rugby league community, and we send our condolences out to the entire Green family.’
