Patriots name starting QB for post-Bill Belichick era as Jerod Mayo makes a call between Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye
The New England Patriots have announced their starting quarterback for the first season after Bill Belichick left the team.
Jerod Mayo takes over as the eight-time Super Bowl champion, having been hired by the linebackers coach in 2019. Following Belichick’s departure, the 39-year-old was named the franchise’s 15th head coach and its first Black head coach.
With a new day dawning in Foxborough, with new personnel, Mayo assigned eight-year veteran and new addition Jacoby Brissett to start in place of third-round pick Drake Maye for the Pats’ opener against Cincinnati on Sept. 8, according to Adam Schefter.
Brissett was drafted by the Patriots in 2016 and returned to New England the following year after leaving.
The NC State star spent much of his rookie year as an understudy to Tom Brady, winning a Super Bowl with Belichick at the helm. With a ring secured, he served tenures with the Colts, Dolphins, Browns and Commanders before returning to where he started as a veteran.
So far, Brissett has played in 79 games and completed 981 of 1,600 attempts for 10,547 yards and 51 touchdowns.
After Thursday’s announcement, North Carolina rookie Maye is behind him on the list.
Despite not starting, the former Tar Heals star passed for 192 yards and a touchdown in the preseason, which saw the Pats go 1-2.
