An already grim-looking New England season just got a whole lot worse.
After a series of tests, Patriots quarterback Mac Jones was confirmed to have a “pretty serious” high ankle sprain, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.
Another NFL Network source, Mike Giardi says the prognosis “means a significant tear.” He added that a team source said “he would be surprised if Jones avoids surgery.”
It is unclear exactly how serious the injury is – as the Patriots are not releasing a timetable or other information about the injury.
On his final pass of the game, Ravens linemen hit Calais Campbell Jones just after he threw the ball and landed on Jones’s rolling ankle.

Jones jumped off the field and to the sidelines on one leg after Campbell’s blow
Jones stumbled off the field to the sidelines and needed help getting off the field. He went to the team’s X-ray room after the game and did not address the media.
Early reports said this injury was not one that could end his season, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
With Jones currently listed as doubtful and expected to miss some time, Bill Belichick will be forced to pit either longtime backup Brian Hoyer or rookie Bailey Zappe against the Packers next weekend.
Jones threw 321 yards, but turned the ball three times in the Ravens’ 37-26 loss
Jones finished the game with 22 passes for 321 yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions.
While we don’t know exactly what type of sprain Jones has, there’s a good chance he has a grade 2 or grade 3 sprain. According to the Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute, a grade 3 high ankle sprain — the most severe grade — usually requires surgery and rehabilitation takes three to six months. That would most likely keep Jones out until week 16 or 17 at the earliest.
Meanwhile, it normally takes six to 12 weeks for a grade 2 sprain to recover. That would put him back between their Week 9 game against the Indianapolis Colts in early November or their Christmas Eve game against the Bengals on Week 16.
