Patrick Mahomes’s father arrested on DWI charge week before Super Bowl

The father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was arrested in Texas on at least his third drunken driving charge, jail records show. The legal issue comes as the younger Mahomes prepares to lead his team to the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers.

Patrick Mahomes Sr., 54, was arrested Saturday evening in Tyler and his bond was set at $10,000. He was released Sunday, according to Smith County, Texas, jail records. If found guilty, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

Mahomes Sr.’s attorney has not yet responded to requests for comment.

His arrest came just over a week before his son led the Chiefs against San Francisco in Las Vegas as Kansas City attempted to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

The younger Mahomes will almost certainly face questions during Super Bowl media night on Monday about whether his father’s arrest will be a distraction. That could be a storyline going into next weekend.

Mahomes Sr. was arrested on the same charge in 2019 and sentenced to 40 days in jail, records show. He played 11 seasons in Major League Baseball as a pitcher for teams such as the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers.
