Patrick Mahomes Sr. pleads guilty to his THIRD drunk-driving charge and agrees to five-year probation weeks after Chiefs star’s dad revealed he’s now sober

Patrick Mahomes Sr. pleaded guilty Tuesday to his third DWI offense.

The 54-year-old retired Major League reliever and father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II appeared in Smith County, Texas, court, where he agreed to five years’ probation, including “intensive” supervision during the first year.

Judge Kerry L. Russell has ordered a pre-sentence report, but a formal sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 23. Mahomes Sr. faced up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

According to court records, the elder Mahomes was seen leaving the courtroom wearing a black long-sleeved shirt, accompanied by his attorney, who declined to comment. KLTV.com.

The affidavit from Mahomes’ Feb. 3 arrest states that officers found an open container of alcohol and an expired registration during a routine traffic stop. Mahomes also admitted to drinking “a couple beers” while watching a game at a nearby bar.

He got into more trouble on June 29 when he was found to be driving with an invalid license. Patrick Sr. has pleaded not guilty in that case and will have a preliminary hearing on October 15.

Mahomes recently announced that he is now sober.

“I want to thank my God wife, family and friends for 6 months on the sunny side of the road,” the elder Mahomes wrote on Instagram earlier this month. “I know it’s been hard getting to know the down to earth Pat but it’s more than worth it.”

His caption also included a message for his wife, Patrick II’s stepmother: “Trisha Mahomes thank you for everything you do.”

Somewhat confusingly, the Instagram post included a photo of Mahomes Sr. with his head cropped out of the frame. Even more perplexing is the presence of baseball’s all-time hit king, Pete Rose, in the photo.

The photo appears to be from a celebrity golf tournament that both Mahomes Sr. and the Cincinnati Reds legend attended in June.

In 2019, he was previously sentenced to 40 days in jail for one of his drunk driving offenses.

The younger Mahomes refused to speak to reporters in Las Vegas about his arrest in the days leading up to his second straight Super Bowl victory.

“It’s a family thing, so I’m keeping it family,” Mahomes told reporters on opening night of the Super Bowl. “That’s all I have to say.”

Mahomes Sr., a divorced father of four, posted a 5.34 ERA in 11 MLB seasons, during which time he was used primarily as a reliever.

Mahomes II inherited his father’s passion for baseball. Not only was he a high school star at Texas, but the reigning Super Bowl MVP is also a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals.

Additionally, Mahomes Sr.’s former teammate on the Minnesota Twins, retired reliever LaTroy Hawkins, is Mahomes II’s godfather.
