Patrick Mahomes reveals the one thing that will STOP him in his quest to beat Tom Brady’s seven Super Bowl victories with the Chiefs… and opens up on his dream of joining MLB team Kansas City Royals for spring training!

Patrick Mahomes has revealed he would like to play as long as Tom Brady, but the Chiefs quarterback insists he will never let his NFL career come between him and his responsibilities as a father.

Brady spent 23 years in the league, winning seven Super Bowls, before calling time on his career last year.

The former Patriots and Buccaneers quarterback is now 46, but Brady admitted this week that he will “never be against” retiring.

Mahomes has won the Vince Lombardi Trophy three times at age 28, having recently led Kansas City to a second straight championship at Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas.

The Chiefs quarterback has two young children with his wife Brittany – daughter Sterling, three, and Patrick ‘Bronze’, who will celebrate his second birthday in November.

Mahomes said TIME He would like to play past 40, but he won’t sacrifice time with his children just to extend his career.

“I looked at, if I played up to Tom (Brady’s) age, my daughter would be 19, 20 years old,” he said. “That would mean missing out on many youth sporting events and other obligations.”

He added: “I would love to play for so long… at the same time I want to be there for my daughter. If that works, I’ll keep playing. But if I feel like it’s taking up my family time, then I know it’s time to go.”

Mahomes also emphasizes that Brady has normalized the abnormal by enjoying such success well into his 40s.

“Tom has twisted people’s brains about how hard that is to do because he took such good care of his body,” the Chiefs kick said. “So I’m about to make sure I get rid of this dad if I want to play until 45.”

With the victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas, Mahomes became only the fifth quarterback in NFL history to win at least three Super Bowls.

He now sits next to Brady, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana and Troy Aikman. But the 28-year-old insists he is ‘nowhere close’ to the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT). He won’t have the discussion until after his career is over.

“You have to build consistency in your career,” he said. ‘You see that in every sport. I had a great run. I think I’ve done a great job so far. But it’s hard to distance yourself from what Tom did for so long, what Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers did.

“There are so many guys, they’ve been at such a high level for so long. To have that conversation, you have to do it from year to year. You can’t assume you did it a year earlier.’

Mahomes has risen to the top of football after turning his back on a baseball career. The quarterback’s father was a pitcher for the Red Sox and the Cubs, among others. Mahomes Jr was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2014 but did not sign a contract.

Today, Mahomes is a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals, who play next door to Arrowhead Stadium. The 28-year-old has no plans to combine careers in baseball and football – or follow Michael Jordan’s example and switch between sports.

But he has talked to the MLB team about participating in practice one day. “If I might be able to go to spring training, I’m not against it,” he said.

“I’ll get it approved by the Chiefs and things like that. But maybe one of these years I’ll go there and see what I’ve got. See if I can still hit the ball or throw it or whatever that is. Maybe not during the matches, but at least I can practice with it.’

Chiefs coach Andy Reid joked that he would be happy if Mahomes showed up on one condition: “He should hire me as a manager,” he told TIME.
