Patrick Mahomes ‘felt good’ after practice and is ‘on track’ to be ready for AFC Championship game against Cincinnati, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid reveals after quarterback suffered a sprained ankle in the Jaguars’ win.

Patrick Mahomes did “good” in practice and was fully involved Wednesday as he builds up his fitness ahead of Sunday’s AFC Championship game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback scared fans last weekend when he was temporarily ejected in their divisional round playoff win over Jacksonville.

He limped out of the game after going awkwardly under an Arden Key tackle in the first quarter, before seeing the rest of the game out, cautiously navigating his high ankle sprain.

There was real concern for Mahomes when he sprained his ankle last weekend.

But Thursday Reid revealed that Mahomes completed the full practice and not only completed it, but did a “good job” with it, putting him “on track” for Sunday.

“He did a good job in practice yesterday, I didn’t have to push him back,” Reid told reporters.

He added: “Patrick felt good today, he went through the course, he’s on the right track.”

Mahomes is critical to the Chiefs’ success and losing him before a crucial AFC Championship home game would have been a huge blow to the Chiefs.

The former NFL MVP and two-time All-Pro said after the win that his ankle felt much better than expected, the first sign that he would be fit enough to go head-to-head with the Bengals.

Mahomes was briefly ejected during the Chiefs’ victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.

On Thursday, coach Andy Reid revealed that Mahomes did ‘good’ in practice and is on the right track.

In a new update on Wednesday, Mahomes revealed that more progress has been made during the week.

‘He’s doing good,’ he said. “I have done a few days of treatment, a few days of rehabilitation. Excited to get on the practice range and try it out and see where I am at. But it feels good so far.

‘I felt better than I thought I would after the game. Moving around during the game definitely hurt, but after the game I was able to rest and freeze it and do different things like that, and I felt in a bit better position.

“So obviously the next morning I felt a little bit better and I kept getting a little bit better throughout the week. So we’ll see how I feel today in practice and I’ll get a better feel for all of you and I think I’ll be able to respond a little better tomorrow.
