You heard it first on the ESPN ‘Manningcast’: Patrick Mahomes — the two-time MVP, two-time Super Bowl champion and two-time Super Bowl MVP — wears the exact same underwear for every NFL game he plays.
Surprisingly, that may not have been his biggest revelation – rather his cosmic powers of perception when it came to calling plays the Denver Broncos defense ran against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.
When Peyton Manning asked him what he thought the Broncos were going to do on 3rd and 9, Mahomes replied, “They’re going to pressure and spy with 42 (Nik Bonitto). They’re going to play him like they played me.”
Sure enough, that’s exactly what happened and it led to Allen throwing an incomplete pass on the play.
Both Peyton and Eli Manning were immediately visibly impressed by Mahomes’ play recognition.

Throughout the remainder of the broadcast, Mahomes provided more insight into some of the secrets he was keeping, including his apparently lucky underwear.
“My wife bought them for me… so I have to wear them,” Mahomes admitted.
“At the same time, I pitched them that first season (and) we had a pretty good season that season.
‘I only wear them on match day though, so they’re not too worn out. They’re not that dirty. I clean them.
“At least I wash them occasionally. I mean… if we’re hot, I can’t wash them, you know? I just have to let it roll.
“So as long as I win football games, I will perpetuate the superstition.”
Mahomes dodged Eli’s questions about exactly what kind of underwear it was: “Is it a thong?” Is it a g-string?’
The Chiefs quarterback also spoke about the intimidating environments he plays in and his use of silent snap counting.
He was able to point out that the Denver Broncos had put a “spy” on Bills QB Josh Allen
Mahomes also revealed that he wears the same underwear every game, with the garment given to him by his wife Brittney.
‘I’m mainly verbal. The only times I was quiet were in Baltimore and Seattle where I had to signal under center.”
Mahomes said an adjustment was necessary because “it was so loud in those stadiums that the (blockers) couldn’t even hear me.”
The Chiefs had a bye this past week and so far they have compiled a 7-2 record to start the season.
Mahomes himself is not performing at the same high level he is used to.
He has only seventeen touchdowns to his name on the season so far and his eight interceptions are very close to his career-worst mark of thirteen with eight games left in the season.
