Patrick Mahomes’ four-word message to Andy Reid before clutch moment in Chiefs win vs Chargers revealed
Patrick Mahomes confidently assured Andy Reid that he would take on the Chiefs in the final minutes against the Chargers — before doing just that.
Kansas City clinched the AFC West title on Sunday after a final kick from Matthew Wright from the upright kick came in to give them a dramatic 19-17 win at home against Los Angeles.
It was the last big breakout for the back-to-back Super Bowl champions in a season that featured plenty of nail-biting wins, and they owed it in large part to Mahomes.
Trailing 17-16, the superstar Chiefs quarterback started his final drive with consecutive incompletions to Isiah Pacheco before bouncing back with a short pass over the middle that Xavier Worthy converted for a first down.
Two plays later, coming out of the two-minute warning, he had the ball on third down at the Chargers’ 20-yard line as the hosts tried to run down the clock and set up a possible walk-off field goal to kick. But instead of running the ball, the Chiefs surprisingly opted to call a pass play.
And according to The Athleticsit was Mahomes who decided to call off the play after telling head coach Reid just before the snap, “I’ll make something happen.”

As he has done so many times over the years, the three-time Super Bowl winner then provided a clutch moment for Kansas City, just as he said, after escaping the Chargers’ pass rush and picking off Travis Kelce for a crucial gain of nine meters and a fresh lead. series of downs.
LA didn’t see the ball again after that play before Wright kicked the walk-off field goal – albeit with some help from the upright.
It was another moment of magic from Mahomes, who finished the night completing 24 of his 37 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown.
However, like co-star Justin Herbert, he was fired three times under intense pressure at Arrowhead.
Mahomes said after clinching their division title in dramatic fashion, “It’s our first goal every year, to win the AFC West. It’s a tremendous division [with] there’s a lot of rivalry with everyone playing hard against each other and, I mean, three teams are probably going to make the playoffs. That says something about the division we play in.
“To be able to win this division, to win another game in the play-offs, it was an important game for us against a very good football team.
“We found a way to win, but now we have to keep building if we want to reach our ultimate goal.”
