The tradition of trick-or-treating has its origins in a variety of European and Celtic customs, including Souling, a medieval English tradition in which people went door to door on All Saints’ Day to recite a song or prayer in exchange for food , usually a soul cake.
The Scottish and Irish tradition of disguise is for people to go door to door in costume and perform a short act to receive food or treats.
The Celtic pagan holiday called Samhain stems from the time when people would dress up and build bonfires to scare away gods who might try to deceive them.
Irish, Scottish and English immigrants brought these traditions to the United States, but trick-or-treating did not become popular until the 1950s.
