Test skipper Pat Cummins shared an emotional moment with his father after leading Australia to a miraculous victory at Edgbaston – just months after losing his mother Maria.
Cummins played with the ball at Birmingham, before his unbeaten 44 in the second innings brought home Australia in one of the greatest Ashes Tests ever played.
The heroic victory comes after a shocking 2023 for Cummins, who lost his mother Maria to breast cancer in March.
Cummins was forced to leave his team midway through the Test series against India to stand by his stricken mother’s side in her final hours and pulled out of his $1.3 million Indian Premier League contract with the Kolkata Knight Riders.
After the game, Cummins expressed how happy he was to have his father and brother back in Edgbaston to support him.

“It was very special, Dad’s been here all week and I’m just lucky to have him here,” Cummins said.
“It’s been a tough few months. My brother has also been here all week.
‘Dad was here in 2019 with Mum. Having him here was just very special.”
Cummins and his father Peter attended a Bruce Springsteen concert on the first night of the Birmingham Test.
“I missed the first 20 minutes, but he put on a show like he always does, The Boss,” Cummins said. “Great week.”
The Aussie captain instantly became an Ashes legend when he guided an Ollie Robinson ball to the third man boundary and Harry Brook spilled it over the rope.
Lyon finished 16 not out, in arguably the most valuable innings of his career.
After rain delayed the start of play by over three hours, Australia’s winning run came at 7:21 pm local time in Birmingham.

England had to regret a number of missed opportunities after Joe Root converted a difficult chance on his own bowling with Cummins on six and skipper Ben Stokes spilled an equally hard outfield catch, despite a spectacular try, when Lyon were on one.
Stokes’ bold statement on day one also proved crucial.
The result was a way to avenge Australia’s pain in losing two runs to England at the same venue in 2005, and the misery of the end of Stokes’ batting prodigy at Headingley in 2019.
Usman Khawaja was man of the match after his stylish century in the first innings and his gritty 65 off 197 balls in Australia’s second round.
The second Test at Lord’s begins on June 28.
