Paris Olympics day 15: men’s marathon, golf, basketball, athletics and more – live
Important events
Before we get too deep into all the action, let’s take a look at the medal tally. Despite most the ‘girt’ sports now that Australia is done, they have managed to hold on to third place behind the US and China, both of whom have a ridiculous number of medals. Japan, Britain and France are all following each other in quick succession and with plenty of medals still to come, anything can happen. Well, not anything, no one comes close to the US and China, but things can certainly happen.
Preamble
Hello everyone and welcome to the live broadcast of the 15th official competition day of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
What an action packed Olympics it has been so far! We have seen some truly incredible performances, magical and emotional moments, dreams come true and others shattered. Today is another big day, with lots on the agenda, starting with the men’s marathon, which is being held at a very Australian friendly time. We see you and we appreciate you, marathon organisers.
There was plenty of excitement on Day 13 and perhaps nothing set the internet on fire more than Australian breaker Rachel ‘Raygun’ Gunn with a performance that generated a million memes. We’ll get to that later!
The women’s beach volleyball concluded under the watchful eye of the Eiffel Tower, with Brazil winning a hard-fought gold medal match, while Canada took silver and Switzerland, a country somehow famous for its inland location, won bronze? Spain added gold to their dominance in the men’s football, but were unable to add a medal to their women’s trophy cabinet, falling to Germany in the bronze medal match.
Imane Khelif fought back against the storm of hate online and in the real world with an inspiring performance to win gold for Algeria. Nafi Thiam put in a brilliant ‘all-rounder’ performance to win gold for Belgium in the heptathlon. The 4x100m relay was a thrilling event, with Canada winning the men’s event, ahead of South Africa and Great Britain. The women’s event was won by the USA, with Great Britain taking silver and Germany bronze.
