It’s been three years since Tokyo 2020 (due for 2021), but the world’s premier sporting competition is back, with events as diverse as rhythmic gymnastics, sport climbing and marathon swimming taking centre stage on your screen. Breaking makes its Olympic debut in Paris, as does kayakcross, while surfing, skateboarding, sport climbing and 3×3 basketball all return. Elsewhere, there are a host of changes to catch up on: men will compete in the artistic swimming competition, there’s a new class in women’s boxing, while the shooting and weightlifting events have been slightly tweaked.
But let’s not get too bogged down in details. As the athletes arrive in town this week and the broadcasting vans are set up along the Seine, it’s time to dream big. Embrace the chaos, it’s time to fall in love with fencing and water polo again.
